One of my favorite bands of all time has been cooking up a new project over quarantine: an EP of covers! Switchfoot is stepping outside of their musical comfort zone to cover some genres and artists I never would have guessed- the first being R&B singer Frank Ocean.

This is a laid-back tune that Switchfoot puts their own rock feel into, with super catchy melodies and a very hip-hop inspired beat. It's interesting to hear Jon Foreman's gritty voice singing a smooth Frank Ocean song, but of course, being incredibly talented, he pulls it off. I haven't been able to stop playing it, and I hope y'all will enjoy it as well!

Netflix has become a faithful friend for people everywhere during these many weeks of quarantine. So if any of y'all are burned out by the overwhelming amount of choices of things to watch, here are some ideas for your next favorite TV show!

Arrested Development

Available on Netflix & Hulu

This quickly took the top spot for me as one of my all-time favorite comedic shows. From its start in 2003, AD is absolutely wacky, brilliantly written, and never fails to deliver a great laugh. The way the writers weave so many different characters and storylines together in the funniest way possible is just amazing- I only watched this series through a couple of months ago, and I'm already missing it and want to re-watch!

Stars: Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Portia DeRossi

Sue Thomas, FB-Eye

Available on Amazon Prime Video

This show is nostalgic for me; me and my family watched it through many years ago when I was a kid, and it was the first time I really fell in love with a show. It follows a woman who is deaf and communicates by reading lips, and, with the help of her service dog and her friends, becomes a successful and useful FBI agent. It's got heart and you really grow to love the characters and their journeys throughout the show.

Person of Interest

Available on Netflix

This show will get you on the edge of your seat and keep you there! It takes place in a world where a machine exists that can predict when someone will be the victim of a violent crime. A small group of highly trained vigilantes then must track those people down and save them. It has many twists and unexpected turns, and blurs the lines of the real world and the mysterious powers of the machine.

Stars: Jim Caviezel, Taraji P. Henson

Blue Bloods

Available on Netflix & CBS All Access

Okay, okay, I know this is a show that everyone's grandma likes, but it's GOOD, OKAY?? It centers around a whole family who works in public justice: police officers, attorneys, and homicide detectives, all headed up by their father, the police commissioner. It's a great show that combines the suspenseful business of solving crime with social issues and navigating a tight-knit family.

Stars: Donnie Wahlberg, Tom Selleck

Bojack Horseman

Available on Netflix

A disclaimer: I'm only on Season 3 of this show currently (out of six), so I can't give a completely fleshed out opinion yet. However, I can't deny there's something really special about this show. It's sometimes funny and ridiculous, with punny jokes, visual gags, pop culture references, and of course, the fact that it takes place in a universe where animals and humans interact on the same level.

But it also deals with serious, heavy, and important themes that aren't usually addressed in funny, animated TV shows, like alcohol and drug addiction, the pressures of fame, taking responsibility for your own (big) mistakes, the difficulties of marriage, pregnancy, asexuality, and depression, I could go on. It strikes an incredible balance between weird comedy and real-life issues, and that in itself is quite impressive.

Stars: Will Arnett, Aaron Paul, Amy Sedaris

Parks & Rec

Available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, & Hulu

This one is just plain funny- it's very lighthearted, well-written, and pretty ridiculous at times. Amy Poehler plays a super-duper-over-achieving woman who is passionate about her job in the Pawnee, Indiana Parks Department. All of the characters are so hilarious in their own way, and their interactions are the highlight of the show.

Stars: Amy Poehler, Adam Scott, Chris Pratt, Aubrey Plaza

The Office

Available on Netflix

I shouldn't have to explain this one much; it's one of the most popular comedy shows out there, and I've seen it many times and still never get sick of it.

Stars: Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Rainn Wilson

Stranger Things

Available on Netflix

Now THIS is a show that is 100% worth the hype. If you're a fan of sci-fi or thriller shows and haven't seen this yet, I recommend it unequivocally. I don't think any other show has ever gotten me hooked and got my adrenaline pumping like this one did. The second season is my personal favorite, but each one has a distinct storyline and the characters go through a lot of development and dynamic changes. It's funny, it's scary, it's interesting, and I just love it.

Stars: Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Joe Keery, Winona Rider

I really don't know what to say about all this, but I know I have to at least stand up in solidarity.

Black lives matter.

The systematic oppression and senseless killings of innocent people need to stop.

I am white, and I am privileged, and I will never understand what it's like to constantly fear for your life in a country that's supposed to be free.

It's my duty to do my part and help to lend black Americans a voice.

Stay safe out there, and do your part however you can.

Wow. Here we are, coming up on June – 2020 is halfway over already. Time's arrow marches on, and so does Coil! Here's what I was up to online this past month:

I started off May the way I always do: with my birthday! I turned 21 on the 3rd, and even though I couldn't go out to a bar or party with friends, I was able to spend a nice date night in with my boyfriend and create my dream charcuterie board! I ate ridiculous amounts of cheese (and some wine) for my birthday dinner, and it was totally worth it.

A beautiful sight to behold.

Twenty One

I also kicked off my first formal foray into the world of freelancing, making my writing services available on Fiverr.

Launching My Fiverr Page!

I've since gotten a couple of my first gigs, writing bios for artists to use on their website or Spotify page. It's pretty satisfying to get directly hired and paid for something that (1) I'm good at and (2) enjoy doing!

I was trying to find some new material to blog about; after posting almost every day in April, I needed to shake things up to keep the creative juices flowing. So I decided to start taking musical trips down memory lane, and revisited my monthly mixtapes from years past.

Monthly Mixtape, Throwback Edition: May 2018

It brought back so many memories that I would have otherwise forgotten about, and I'm pretty excited to continue going through my past years of music in future posts.

This one is the post this month that I think was kind of underrated - I started designing fun, colorful wallpapers on Canva, and I'm very proud of what I've done so far. If your computer needs a refresh, check this one out!

5 Creative Wallpapers For Your Desktop!

Mental and emotional stress eventually caught up to me, and I got through it okay, but not before I finally joined the ranks of countless creators who make a post about burnout.

Some exciting news for the Coil universe came next: Uphold became the latest and greatest wallet provider for streaming micropayments, the XRPTipBot, trading all typed of cryptocurrency, and (my favorite) transferring USD!

Hello, Uphold!

A few days after I got my new payment pointer set up, I was very pleasantly surprised to earn my largest boost to date by a long shot:

Plugging away and creating some real quality content while I was home from work all of April really did pay off. I posted a total of 25 articles in the 30 days of the month, and received a total of 203 upvotes, which averages out to about 8 upvotes per post.

I treated myself by ordering some clothing pieces I've had my eye on for a while, and bought a super cute new desk for my new room in my apartment! One thing that quarantine hasn't put a stop to is my fashion sense and love for online shopping!

I ended the month of May by getting two features in a row, wow! First, by categorizing my favorite types of music:

My Many Musical Styles: A Classification

...and then featuring one of my favorite local coffee spots:

Small Business Spotlight: The Plymouth Coffee Bean

Finally, drum roll please, I hit my 100th post!

100 POSTS!

It was quite a month, and summer is finally starting here in Michigan, so I can't wait for June to kick off )and hopefully get the world a little more back to normal).

This tune brings us an encouraging message this Saturday. The lyrics are a reminder to stop worrying so much, and that we are loved and cared for. Today, I'll let the message speak for itself; listen to the tune, read the lyrics, and lift your spirits.

-

Child, where you headed?

There’s a sunset round the bend

Someone else will plant more flowers

In the garden that you tend

Child, what’s the hurry?

You can’t take it when you go.

You’re so intent on finding finish lines

That you don’t know where to go.

And I’ll be

The one that you call yours

Child, why the shouting?

Life is quiet on most days

Child I tried to tell you

There’s a mind behind your face

Child, please don’t cry

I know the tears come on so easy

Your pleas for safety don’t fall short

You don’t have to please me

Child, I’m not leaving

And you can’t break the hold

I’ll keep your eyes uplifted

Keep you warm when you get cold

And I’ll be

The one that you call yours

Thanks for reading!

Can you believe it? Because I sure can't.

I don't know if I've ever made a hundred of anything. That's a big, big number, especially when it comes to creative endeavors. I've been a part of Coil since October 2019, but I only started posting consistently beginning in this January 2020. A hundred posts in six months.

And by “here,” I mean:

- A total of almost $1,000 in boost payment income. Huh??? It still blows my mind that I'm able to grow my savings (and/or treat myself) with a few hundred dollars every month from creating online content, when I want and how I want it. Everything about this opportunity seems too good to be true, and people are still skeptical whenever I explain it to them, but I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of something that is only just beginning to take off. Coil's web monetization technology has the potential to completely change the Internet as we know it, and I am so excited to be in on the ground floor and watch other people get involved and succeed.

Boosted payouts from my blog are helping me to save up even faster to move out on my own for the first time, and a lot of my Coil dollars will continue to sit in my savings for a honeymoon or a first house payment someday.

A key to long-term wealth that I'm actively working on is having multiple streams of income, and Coil has jump-started that process for me. I'm still so young and have so much more to learn, but this preliminary experience of being “self-employed” has been incredibly valuable to me, both emotionally and monetarily.

- An average of 19 posts per month (that's about one every other day). Being self-motivated and breaking out of procrastination has never been easy, even throughout high school and college. Committing to this platform and making writing posts a priority has helped me in this area immensely. When I first found out about the opportunity to get paid, I knew that if I wanted boosts, I had to want it enough to work for it. Working time into my schedule to write & post hasn't been easy amidst college classes and my day job, but I made it work, and I've gotten better at managing my time and prioritizing both what's important and what I enjoy doing.

- Going from zero to 52 followers, which I know isn't much in the grand scheme of things. But when the top creators on the platform have 200 followers, being 25% of the way there feels pretty decent to me. Plus, having 52 followers means that I have over fifty people that care about what I have to say and want to support me, and I appreciate each and every one of those people, regardless of how many there are.

So, to everyone who follows me, comments on my posts on Twitter, reads what I have to say, or upvotes, know that I am always thankful for any bit of support you show. This is such a wonderful community to be a part of, and I can't wait to continue to grow and change the world through the Internet of Value.

Coffee shops are a staple in every city and suburb, from your Starbucks on every corner and Dunkin' Donuts drive-throughs, to cozy coffeehouses where you can take a seat and stay awhile, to work, socialize, and treat yourself to some snacks. The Plymouth Coffee Bean in downtown Plymouth, Michigan falls into the latter category, and I've spent many mornings and evenings here, so it's only fitting that I give it a feature here.

This century-old, downtown house was converted into the Coffee Bean Co. in 1993, making it the longest running independent coffee shop in the entire state of Michigan. Their menu features coffee and specialty espresso drinks, as well as teas, blended frozen drinks, Italian sodas, and plenty of baked goods and snacks from local shops and bakeries.

plymouthcoffeebean.com

In addition to the outdoor patio being lovely and inviting...

...the inside still feels like a cozy living room, where you can catch up with friends or work on your laptop.

In addition to great ambience and tasty food, the Coffee Bean also hosts open mics and concerts regularly, showcasing local talent and creating an accessible environment where anyone can perform.

Musical regulars, Water Fountain Coins.

I have spent countless Monday nights here over the last few summers, watching my boyfriend and his bandmates perform acoustic sets at open mics, and even getting a few prime-time Saturday night concert sets as well. It's also been a great place to meet friends to hang out, work, or talk, and I've spent long afternoons studying here as well. I truly hope the Coffee Bean pulls through the pandemic; and I can't wait to visit them again once the world reopens.

Throughout the past several months of writing music reviews, curating monthly playlists, and discovering countless new artists and genres, I've always wondered: what is “my type” when it comes to music?

I have such a wide range of songs that I enjoy, it has seemed nearly impossible to actually put a title to my musical styles. But, this past week, as I was driving down the highway and letting my thoughts wander, I think I've finally put my finger on what the top categories are for me, in terms of music I enjoy the most.

Honest, Alternative Girl Pop

Kicking things off is the category that I think holds the highest number of my favorite artists: female singers who not only shake things up musically within their “pop” genre bubble, but also write honest, vulnerable, unique, and creative lyrics.

This genre has interested me and connected with me ever since I was a young teenager, the starting point being Taylor Swift, with her specific, emotional, and relatable lyrics about life and love.

I admire all of these artists because of their ability to tell stories and relate to listeners through their lyrics. They all have plenty of upbeat bops, as well as vulnerable or sad songs, so there's a great balance, no matter what my mood.

Inspiring, Well-Written, Not-Overtly-Christian Rock

Next, we have a very well-loved genre that I truly came to love because of my boyfriend, Peter, introducing it to me, way back when we were becoming friends at age 16.

They all write amazing, creative lyrics, their melodies and instrumentation are interesting and catchy, and their music ranges from slow, acoustic ballads to grand, stadium rock. They are all faith-based, but they are not necessarily only for Christian music listeners. Plenty of people who are not involved in Christianity are still huge fans of these artists, because

If any of you decide to listen to any of my categories, I would hope it would be this one! All of these songs/artists have become so important to me over the years, and they are truly so talented in every aspect!

Ben Rector legitimately writes the most lovely, adorable songs out there. He has a very specific talent for capturing the simple yet profound joys of life, looking back on the past, and love. Pretty much any song by him, if I listen to it, I'll cry, whether they're happy tears, sad tears, or nostalgic tears, or maybe all of the above.

This newest single is a product of its time for sure, but it puts a positive spin on the usual complaining about the current state of the world – it's not so bad being stuck at home if you're with someone you can have fun with!

And if the world has got to end

You might as well just end up in my arms

And we'll leave on the news until the broadcast stops broadcasting

Yes, making drinks instead of plans while the record player's blasting

This single has the same signature, synth-heavy, happy-go-lucky 80's vibe that Ben Rector came to claim as his own on his last album, Magic. It's sweet, it's catchy, and you can't help but groove to it. Add this to your playlist of upbeat songs that are getting you through quarantine!
