Olivia O'Brien is a relatively small-time, alternative pop, one-woman show straight from Los Angeles, and even though there's about a million other aspiring singers that match that description exactly, there's something special about her style that I love. She's honest (sometimes a little TOO specifically) and isn't afraid to write about life as a twenty-something being less than stellar.

She's most well-known for her feature in the pop radio hit i hate u, i love u, which hit number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2016. She has released various singles and EP's in the past few years, including a full-length LP, Was It Even Real?, this past April.

This EP is another installment in a series of what Olivia has described as “micromixtapes”– “projects made up of two or three songs that fit together sonically and lyrically.”

Was It All In My Head? opens the short-but-sweet, three-song EP with a guitar driven tune that's more pop-rock than Olivia's usual style. She wonders why she didn't see through a guy's empty promises of “I'm not like the other boys”. She thinks she must have completely made up his good personality, because reality has proved that he's not a keeper.

Josslyn is QUITE the breakup song, with Olivia calling out the girl with whom her man cheated on her BY NAME. Doesn't get much more savage than that. She lays out the truth of the situation matter-of-factly: she was involved with a guy, but he decided to cheat on her... with Josslyn. She shrugs it off:

But now we're off and we'll never be on again
I hope that it was worth it, f—-ing Josslyn

Don't wanna fight, I just never wanna talk again
I hope that it was worth it, f—-ing Josslyn.

Profane? Yes. Still a fun song to sing along to and be sassy? Also yes.

Sad Together wraps things up in typical Olivia O'Brien fashion, with a slightly depressing, but honest tune, knowing that life is going to let you down. Sometimes, you're just going to be sad, but having someone to commiserate with is still better than being sad AND lonely. It's very much in the same vein as her past popular singles, Empty and No Love.

Olivia has no qualms about sharing songs about the results of her poor judgement- getting involved with guys who won't treat her right, getting cheated on, and getting down in the dumps after drinking too much. But you can tell by listening that these songs are her own, written straight from her experiences, and aren't watered down or run through countless record label execs before the music reaches the listener's ear. She's got her own, modern, LA, emotional girl style that continues to get stuck in my head.

If I'm not listening to music, I'm listening to podcasts; nothing beats a good, entertaining conversation on a long drive across town. I'm taking a little break from the musical discourse today to bring you a review of one of my favorite podcasts I've ever discovered: approachable!

approachable. is the brainchild of two creative and opinionated women. Samantha Ravndahl is an accomplished makeup artist and influencer on YouTube and Instagram, and Alyssa Anderson is a former restaurant manager with a growing acting career. The two upper-twenty-somethings have been close friends since high school, and are native to Vancouver, Canada.

Alyssa & Sam.

My love for this podcast stems mainly from how interesting and well-educated the girls' conversations are. They tackle a wide range of topics that hold significant relevancy today, such as mental health, unconventional careers, and navigating relationships (with romantic partners, family, or friends). Each episode brings a fresh perspective that usually differs from my own, and the girls are not shy about sharing their life experiences and struggles throughout their many seasons of life. It helps that they're entertaining to listen to as well; even when they're covering heavy topics, they always interject their dry, ridiculous humor throughout to keep the mood light.

A few of my top episodes are:

Millennials

This is the first episode I listened to that got me hooked! This conversation is so informative, and gave me a perspective on not only the young generation that I am a part of, but also my parents and grandparents' generations. The girls did some really interesting research about the characteristics and traits of each of the past four generations (the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials), and I learned so much about how different the socioeconomic situations of each group has been.

What It's Like Living with Chronic Illness w/

I love to watch Kristi (@rawbeautykristi) on YouTube, so when I saw that she was a guest on the podcast, I couldn't wait to listen. I learned so much about different chronic illnesses from this episode, and it gave me such a deep respect and awareness of those who have to deal with intense pain or discomfort on a daily basis.

Learning to Love Ourselves w/

I had never heard of Sarah Nicole, aka @thebirdspapaya, until this episode, but ever since I heard her speak on the podcast, I've been following her posts on Instagram religiously. She is an open book about her own struggles with being comfortable in her body, post-weight loss, post-pregnancy, and post-eating disorder. There are so many gems throughout this conversation concerning positivity, mindset change, dealing with changing physical appearance, and motherhood, and I appreciated every bit of it.

Quitting Our Jobs + Following Our Dreams w/ @shaughnessy

I live vicariously through this one, since I, too, dream of having a successful, creative career that I can pursue from the comfort of my own home and my own schedule. Shaughnessy runs an eyebrow microblading & restorative tattoo studio in British Columbia, Canada. Her story of taking the leap into being a business owner is inspiring, and her entrepreneurial spirit is infectious.

Nothing conveys the emotions of love quite like a song. Sweet love songs have always been some of my favorites, since I'm a real sap and I'll cry happy tears at just about anything that's remotely emotional.

I've been dating my lovely boyfriend, Peter, for a year and a half now, after being friends all throughout our late teenage years. Putting on some cute songs and slow dancing in the living room is a favorite pastime of ours, so I wanted to share the songs that are special to me for all of you to enjoy, and maybe even share with your significant other this Valentine's Day!

(This holiday for celebrating love is only four days away, so this is a strategically placed reminder to anyone who may have forgotten to make some plans for you and your S.O... you're welcome!)

I Will Always Be Yours – Ben Rector

https://open.spotify.com/track/4m1lB7qJ78VPYsQy7RoBcU?si=pjAjI1OuQESLLapLAmAaBA

Ben Rector writes some of the sweetest love songs out there, with an easygoing writing style that hearkens back to the days of James Taylor and John Denver. This song has some real 80's flavor, with prominent synths and piano, and talks about how no matter what troubles come, the other person will always be there and belong to them.

In a world where things come and go, the only thing I can't afford to lose is you

If My Heart Was A House – Owl City

https://open.spotify.com/track/6c6t0aQOtVUZTxRQTlEkZQ?si=GlbmWKOCS5atNulzs81UJg

I've loved this song since I was in middle school, and its 6/8 time is just asking to be slow danced to. Owl City songs have a totally unique sweetness to them, with colorful metaphors, dreamy instrumentals, and quirky, creative lyrics, and this track is just so soothing and lovely.

Circle me and the needle moves gracefully

Back and forth, if my heart was a compass you'd be North

Risk it all cause I'll catch you if you fall

Wherever you go, if my heart was a house you'd be home

I Wanna Know – The Timbre of Cedar

https://open.spotify.com/track/0O63tJjpjW8Mqa6wk1mPiv?si=A_PedKfiRqy33xz5suR8ZA

My friends wrote this song! Marrissa and Sam (the couple pictured in the single artwork) are both bandmates and soulmates, and any song they play about love is made even better knowing that they're married and they really mean it. This one expresses the desire to always want to continue to talk with the one you love and learn even more about them each day.

I’m just trying to read behind your eyes

Do we have the same question?

Do I want to risk the last goodbye
to tell you what I’m thinking?

I don't think I can drive another mile

Without telling you the words caught on my tongue

Lover – Taylor Swift

https://open.spotify.com/track/0bzbvANY6oETSJLc0wlVGY?si=-7W5_5u3QdS4caKkyeNQWw

I didn't know if I'd ever say that Taylor Swift would make a song that's wedding-worthy, but here we are. It's honestly a wonderful feeling to have grown up with Taylor's music, hearing her sing about young love and heartbreak, and now having it come full circle, with her writing songs about really feeling like she's found the one. The song sounds almost theatrical, and it feels like the security of being with someone you know, trust, and love.

Can I go where you go?

Can we always be this close forever and ever and

Take me out, and take me home

You're my, my, my, my lover

The Gambler – fun.

https://open.spotify.com/track/1Y5wYXgX9dHwSKZdQNHEhV?si=dYx68bP9T2-ZkgXaxUJncQ

This one has a very special place in my heart- it's one of “our songs.” It tells the tale of living a simple life, meeting for the first time, then raising children, moving to new places, and growing old together.

I swear when I grow up, I won't just buy you a rose, I will buy the flower shop, and you will never be lonely

Even if the sun stopped waking up over the fields, I will not leave, I will not leave 'till it's our time

So just take my hand, you know that I will never leave your side

Us Against The World – Coldplay

https://open.spotify.com/track/5zyfzNnBzN7f7PVkJFnW2g?si=r5ZP79C9QsSYkMlu4Qu-Og

Coldplay's acoustic ballads from their earlier albums are just incredible, and this is no exception. It speaks of love being a safe haven throughout the grand expanse of life.

And sing slow it down

Through chaos as it swirls

It's us against the world

Extraordinary Magic – Ben Rector

https://open.spotify.com/track/6twjbQiAbWOMUt4S8RoDbk?si=mBWJKIoIQY2IbuAc5Nl2bw

He's so nice, I had to include him twice. This is a sweet piano ballad that really showcases Ben Rector's songwriting skills, and tells how love is nothing short of a miracle.

You won't believe it, strange as it sounds

Extraordinary magic follows you around

And the camera can't catch it, you won't see it in the mirror

If I say look behind you, you turn around, it disappears

But I see it, I see it

I swear I do, I see extraordinary magic in you

Still Fallin' – Hunter Hayes

https://open.spotify.com/track/5nqD7Un5BOLlnk5AjfXZRJ?si=tjD2jOUfQrKpuvOkd_k5YQ

On this track, Hunter Hayes sings about how even after knowing someone for years, having true love still keeps things exciting, and growing a relationship deeper with time doesn't get rid of the initial sparks.

But after all this time, you'd think I'd be used to the pull of your gravity

And after flying so high for so long, who would think I'm still learning, still burning, still fallin'

All This Time – OneRepublic

https://open.spotify.com/track/48FuVo0KwE3N7Fqmc8cT4r?si=RW_HuNNjQFSj5mlSyMdYJA

This is another throwback all the way to 2009- this album was one of the first I ever owned on CD, and even as a middle schooler, I could tell that this song was really special. It captures the feeling of being lost in the world, but knowing that the right time and place would bring love into your life.

All this time
we were waiting for each other

All this time
I was waiting for you

We got all these words, can't waste them on another

So I'm straight in a straight line
running back to you

Learning How To Love – Colony House

https://open.spotify.com/track/631hvSSsxGYT3DOBVVS4qM?si=VnKtiJtKSdSEh9HqD8IU1A

Now THIS is a song I've sobbed in my car to. It came along right at a time when I came to terms with some unhealthy and rude behaviors that had become habits for me, and I knew that I had to change for the sake of the people around me, as well as my relationship. It's still a romantic song about growing together and having to figure out what truly loving actually is, but the concept carries so much weight. It's hard work to change toxic things about yourself, but it's worth the blood, sweat, and tears to make yourself a better person for the one you love.

Trust me

You took my hand and said “trust me”

You took my heart and said “love me
with who you are, not with who you were”

I've been waiting for things to change in my heart again

I've been changing while waiting on, keep taking steps for you

I've been changing, but I'm still learning how to love

Every Road – Simonne Bruck

https://open.spotify.com/track/6al2D9xrXUalEdwpRAZ9k7?si=szatLAwbT5ywB44xHsn2Xg

Last, but certainly not least, this wonderful ukulele tune evokes the soaring, light feeling of being so in love you can't describe it. I have a full review of this song as well as the EP it's on, you can read it here!

It was like breath in my lungs when I first laid my eyes on you

Almost too good to feel when you came out of the blue

The boys are back!

5SOS was a huge part of my teenage years, so I'll always have a special love for anything they release. This new era of their sound came upon us quite unexpectedly, with the band announcing their next tour in late 2020, and an album release date only two months from now. No Shame is the lead single from 5SOS' upcoming fourth album, and spoiler alert: it's really good.

The vocals really shine in this song, with great mid-range verses and a super catchy, falsetto chorus. They also really experiment with funky guitar tones and synths to round out the sound. It's got a lighter feel than some of their more recent singles- not as industrial, more straight-up pop rock, with an 80's feel from those synths. Hopefully I get to see them play this tune live very soon!

In my opinion, you can't appreciate Colony House's music to the fullest extent until you know their story.

Caleb and Will Chapman, the lead singer and drummer, respectively, are the two oldest sons of Christian music legend Steven Curtis Chapman. Steven and his wife, Mary Beth Chapman, adopted three young girls from China in 2004, the littlest of which was Maria Sue. In 2008, she was tragically killed in a car accident in the driveway of their family home.

Obviously, this was a huge blow to the entire family, and they experienced unimaginable pain and grief from this sudden loss of a beautiful young life. But what was even more remarkable than the tragedy was the Chapmans' strength, faith, and hope in healing, forgiving, and moving forward. Caleb and Will have always used their music in Colony House to spread that message of inspiring hope, even in the face of tragedy and temptation to despair. This new release is no exception.

...

Looking for Some Light opens the record with a slowly building anthem, reminding us that “everybody's looking for some light” in the midst of life's journeys and trials.

Oh, and when the world is weighing on your shoulder

When the sorrow's heavy on your soul

Carry on and sing it like a soldier

Saying, “Come on! Come on!

We're gonna make it home!”

Next, we enter into interlude territory with Runaway Pt. 1 (Love Has A Limit). It's a simple, short verse, with a slight vocoder effect on the vocals, which is one of my favorite things to hear from a production standpoint. It expresses the feeling of being a runaway and lost in the middle, wondering if “even love has a limit, love can't forgive it all away.”

Leave What's Lost Behind really kicks things off as the title track, and I think it sounds like an homage to U2 with that stadium rock feel. It assures that “this foundation is something real you can believe in.” This song will have plenty of power as a live performance, with lyrics that are easy to yell along to.

Original Material is the pop-leaning single that has a fun, upbeat feel, and a message not to fit in and to be unique and original. They ask “why can't you be yourself, man?”, something that I'm sure we could all stand to ask ourselves once in a while. The bridge breaks down to half time, which adds a nice little change in dynamics to an otherwise straightforward pop groove.

El Capitan is, for lack of a better term, a real banger. This is where we get into their bouncy style of rock n' roll, as well as some unexpected hip-hop flavor with slowed down choruses & electronic hi hats. El Capitan is a rock face in Yosemite National Park that's notoriously difficult to summit, and Colony House says they'd tackle it for the one they love:

You say love is like a mountain, treacherous and true
Girl, don't you know that I would climb up El Capitan for you

Why Even Try is hands down my favorite track from this album, because I am always an emotional wreck when it comes to Colony House's inspiring ballads. As shown by the story behind their lives, any encouraging song they write is so much more special than what meets the eye.

The song expresses the fear deep inside of failing any new thing we attempt to accomplish or change- 'the damage is done, so why even try?” The tone changes halfway through, however, and reminds us that “everyone's scared that they're not enough, that I'm permanently broken”. They tell us that there is always hope, and I'll let the rest of the bridge speak for itself:

So why do I always measure the truth with the weight of a lie?

Nothing's broken inside of me for good, I'm healing in time the way I should

I can see it if I keep my head held high, arms open wide

Heart full, clear eyes

All the doubts, all the lies

Are too heavy to carry alone, so why even try?

Runaway Pt. 2 (Love Is A Compass) is the second installment in the interlude category, which comes to the realization that “love is a compass, lies have been leading you instead”. The lies of self doubt and discouragement can be a difficult path to veer away from, but it's too heavy of a load to bear when you could walk towards hope and love instead.

I have a dedicated Single Saturday about the next track, Where I'm From, which you can read here! It's a lovely break in the action, with a simple, Southern Gospel flair.

Take It Slow is, contrary to what you may think, far from slow. It brings the energy right back up, all about “living while you're alive” and fighting for the moments while you have them. This track ends with a sudden drop into a breakdown of sorts, with that same hip-hop influence we've seen in a few of the other tracks. I get what they were going for, but I'm not the biggest fan of the change-up in this song, it doesn't quite fit right.

Julia is a wonderful guitar ballad about Caleb's wife... you guessed it, she's named Julia. It's sweet, simple, and uses many metaphors to describe her beauty.

Her hand in the palm of my hand makes me feel like I am who I say I am

I hold it closer than a memory

Her voice is the sound that I hear when I start to disappear into the noise again, I hear her calling in the wind

Her eyes like a Tennessee sunrise color in the clouds I'm living in

Once you have seen it, you never forget

If I was named Julia, I'd want to slow dance to it all the time, but it's not, so I can still appreciate it from a distance!

Trying goes through the many expectations of life- to have good manners, succeed in your career, and keep pressing on- and how sometimes it feels like you've just been trying to breathe and simply survive for so long. It calls back to the title track- “Looking for some light to carry me through, just to make it to morning”. This track makes one of the best interesting musical choices in my opinion, using an analog synth lead to fill out the choruses, and messing with vocal effects as well.

Runaway Pt. 3 (The Weight) wraps up the narrative of the interludes, simple asking “can you carry the weight?” This appears to be a callback to Why Even Try, which ends with the sentiment that we cannot carry the weight of our struggles on our own, and we need to reach out to loved ones and be in community in order to have a hopeful, joy-filled life.

The Hope Inside closes this album in signature Colony House style, pulling out one more rock tune to remind us that “the hope inside comes alive when it's all we have left.” It looks ahead to the main reason Colony House has this unwavering hope- their faith and trust in God that everything that happens is for a greater purpose.

Maybe there's a reason why this world spins around in circles

Like it's giving us another try, every sunrise to find purpose

Has it been happening all this time like another breath that goes unnoticed?

I'm leaving what is lost behind to find the light

Oh, 'cause maybe it's the hope inside that comes alive

When it's all we have left

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love Cimorelli (a little too much). I've been watching these talented sisters cover popular songs on YouTube since I was 13 years old, and they never cease to amaze me with their many musical talents. If you recognize any of these tunes, watch the video and listen to their version- I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Dancing On My Own – Robyn

This cover is completely acapella, and remains to be one of the greatest things I've ever heard. The chords! Lisa's high notes in the last chorus! Unbelievable!

Mirrors – Justin Timberlake

An oldie but a goodie- this is from all the way back in 2013, and they got a member of Big Time Rush to perform this with them, but it just goes to show that even when they were all that young, the girls could still riff like nobody's business.

Without Me / Cry Me A River – Halsey / Justin Timberlake

This mashup was just waiting to happen, since Halsey sampled JT's lyrics for her 2018 hit single. I also love the performance style of this video, with all the girls playing more interesting, stripped-down instruments.

Demi Lovato Medley

Alright, get the tissues out for this one, because it's ridiculously powerful. The girls pulled sections from many of Demi Lovato's emotional, vulnerable songs, and the result is beautiful and heart-wrenching.

Wolves / Friends Mashup – Selena Gomez / Justin Bieber

After listening to this mashup, I honestly don't listen to either of the original versions of the two songs, because, well... this one is just way cooler.

Justin Timberlake Medley

Yeah, yeah, they do really enjoy covering Justin Timberlake, I only noticed it while compiling this list! I was never really into his music, but this track got stuck in my head for WEEKS SOLID after they released it.

You Say – Lauren Daigle

The original song already gets me emotional, but hearing the girls sing it this way only makes it more beautiful. The harmonies fill it out so well, and the key change at the end... wow.

The fiery frontwoman of Paramore has broken out into solo endeavors, and she's mad about it. Hayley William's first musical release on her own tells a tale of wrath and an exhortation to Simmer Down.

This track has many of the stylings of “new” (After Laughter-era) Paramore, with a groovy drum beat and subdued, soft instrumentals. Hayley sings about counting to ten, rage in veins, and lots of simmering. It strikes an interesting balance of a mostly benign, upbeat soundtrack behind biting words, debating “how to draw the line between wrath and mercy”.

Hayley has made her failed relationships and personal struggles very public through her music and songwriting, so there is plenty of speculation on who or what the rage of this song is directed towards. However, I don't enjoy getting into drama- I'd much rather just get into the beat of the song!
